Happy New Years! A new year is upon us. It’s a time when we all look back on the past year and start making resolutions for the new year. While you are probably going to make some personal resolutions for yourself, you may want to consider making resolutions as a family this year. Sure, times are tough this year, with the economic difficulties, but there are some great resolutions you can make with the entire family that will help to bring your family even closer together in 2010. Here’s a look at some great ideas for family resolutions that will keep your family bond strong.
Spending More Time Together
One great family resolution that you can make as a family is to spend more time together. By time I mean quality time where family members are actively involved in one other. Our Family should be our main focus, and as we make this resolution, we will be teaching our kids about the things that really matter in life – family! Resolve together as a family that you’ll make more time for each other. It’s easy to get busy in life, busy with friends, mom and dad busy with work, and each of the family members rushing around here and there. It can be so easy to drift apart. Even if it’s once a week or once a month, set aside some time to be together. Plan family nights and activities that you’ll all enjoy or plan a family “date” night when you all set everything aside and enjoy time with each other. In the end, if you keep this resolution, you’ll build your family ties and make them stronger.
Getting Active Together
With obesity on the rise all over the country, another great family resolution to make together for 2010 is to get active together. Deciding to get active on your own can be tough, but if you make it a family resolution, you’ll find that it is easier for everyone when you’re all involved. This way you can all hold each other responsible. Find great activities that you can get involved in together, such as swimming, joining a gym together, walking together, or even working out on Wii Fit as a family. Keep this resolution and by the end of the year you’ll all be in better shape and feeling healthier too.
Going Greener This Year
Going green this year is a great New Year’s resolution that you and the whole family can make together. Keeping the earth clean and working to make it a great place to live is an important thing, and you can work on this together as a family. There are many different ways that you can work to go green as a family. If you’re not recycling, set up recycling containers and work on recycling things like plastic and cans so they don’t just get thrown away when you use them. Find ways to reuse things in your home, give clothes to goodwill instead of throwing them away, or simply start shopping with reusable bags. You can even start composting to make use of those scraps in the kitchen. When you all work together as a family, you can really make a difference and go green together – doing something great for you and the earth.
Helping Others as a Family
Helping others as a family is yet another great family resolution to put into practice for 2010. Make the resolution as a family that you are going to work at helping other people together as a family this year. There are many ways that you can help others. You’ll be spending time together as a family and you’ll be teaching your kids about compassion and giving to others. One idea is to spend time volunteering together, going to a homeless shelter and serving food, or simply helping out an older neighbor on your street. Getting involved in helping children abroad is another great idea, with groups like World Vision, Feed the Children, Feed the Hungry, and other charities that work to feed children in other countries who are starving.
As you can see, there are many excellent resolutions that you can make together as a family. So this New Year’s Day, sit down together, come up with some great resolutions, and then work at keeping them together throughout the year of 2010.
